TV in-app purchases: Samsung Checkout vs Paymentwall

On phones, in-app purchases are one library call. On TVs, Samsung has a full payment system that is effectively partner-only, LG has dropped its own billing for Paymentwall, and Whale TV and Titan OS publish nothing. Here is how each works and how to combine purchases with ads.

Samsung Checkout and the DPI portal

Samsung Checkout is a complete TV payment system: a three-step purchase flow on the TV, products managed in the DPI portal, settlement and payout run by Samsung, and a service matrix covering 120 countries.

Product types

  • Consumable: coins, lives, hints.
  • Non-Consumable: a level pack, "remove ads".
  • Limited Period: access for a set time.
  • Subscription: with upgrade and downgrade tiers, and free trials per product group (once per account and/or device).
  • Paid App.
  • Dynamic Product: product data managed in your own system instead of the DPI portal.

The access question

The Billing API is a public privilege (available since Tizen 2.4; cancelSubscription since 4.0). But the purchase flow uses the SSO API's getLoginUid, which needs the partner-level sso.partner privilege, and the Flutter in_app_purchase_tizen plugin documentation says apps must be signed with a partner-level certificate. Add that Public Sellers can launch only in the US, and Samsung Checkout is realistically a Partner Seller feature. Buyers need a Samsung account. Samsung doesn't publish its revenue share; check your Seller Office terms.

LG webOS: billing discontinued, Paymentwall recommended

LG's in-app purchase guide says: "The LG Billing Service for In-App Purchase is no longer provided." LG recommends Paymentwall and may ask for a separate contract if you use another third-party billing solution.

In Seller Lounge the billing options are webOS Pay, third-party billing, or both. webOS Pay is tied to the user's LG account; how widely it is open to third-party developers isn't clear from public documents. When developers asked about Stripe and PayPal in August 2026, LG pointed them to the provider and to Seller Lounge 1:1 Q&A. LG publishes no revenue-share figures.

Whale TV and Titan OS

Neither publishes a payment or subscription API for third-party apps. Whale TV's commercial terms are set in its distribution agreement; Titan OS handles commercial questions through its business development team. If you need payments there, the usual route is your own account system with payment on the phone.

Remote-friendly checkout

Typing a card number with a D-pad is where TV purchases die. Whatever the payment system:

  • Use the platform flow where you have it. A stored account payment (Samsung Checkout) is a few OK presses.
  • Otherwise hand off to the phone. Show a QR code that opens a checkout page tied to the TV session, and unlock the item when the server confirms payment.
  • Few, clear products. Two or three options with the price on the button.
  • Confirm on screen and restore purchases on reinstall.

Hybrid: in-app purchases plus rewarded ads

Most players in a free TV game won't buy anything. Ads earn from all of them; purchases earn from a few. The two work together:

  • Sell "remove ads" as a non-consumable, and keep rewarded ads available for players who want them.
  • Give the same item two prices: coins for a purchase, or a smaller amount for a rewarded ad.
  • Use ads where purchases aren't possible: on Whale TV and Titan OS, or as a Public Seller outside the US.
if (!store.owns("remove_ads")) {
  await SofAds.showInterstitial({ placement: "level_break" });
}

// Rewarded stays available to everyone, including buyers
SofAds.showRewarded({ placement: "bonus_coins", onReward: () => wallet.add(50) });

How SofAds fits

SofAds doesn't process payments. It is the ads half of the hybrid model: one SDK for interstitial, rewarded and scan-to-reward QR ads on Tizen, webOS, Whale TV and Titan OS, with free usage analytics. It is in early access for outside publishers.

Frequently asked questions

Does LG still have in-app billing?

No. LG says the LG Billing Service for In-App Purchase is no longer provided and recommends Paymentwall. Other third-party billing may need a separate contract.

Do users need a Samsung account to buy in a Tizen app?

Yes. Samsung Checkout purchases are tied to the user's Samsung account.

Can a Public Seller use Samsung Checkout?

The Billing API is public, but the login API used in the purchase flow is partner-level, and Public Sellers can only launch in the United States. In practice, Samsung Checkout needs Partner Seller status.

Ads or in-app purchases for a casual TV game?

Usually both: ads earn from every player, purchases from the few who pay. Sell a "remove ads" option where the platform supports payments, and keep rewarded ads as an opt-in for everyone.
